Visionen about a sámi church
A dream was born somewhere on the tundra.
A dream about a free and open church, where Saami can be Saami and Swede can be Swede.
A dream about a church, where traditional hymns can be sung and where jojk can be heard to praise Ipmil, God.
A dream about a church, where the mother tongue, which is the language of the heart, is allowed to carry prayers.
The dream was born where we sat around the fire and waited for the reindeer to come. And a question was put to my heart: if Jesus would come walking over the tundra, if Jesus would be born into the Saami culture, would there be a place for him in the church? Would we allow Jesus to speak Saami with his Saami disciples? Would we let them express the joy of faith by their own culture?
Could Jesus become Saami? May the body of Christ, which is the church, be a Saami body and may that body wear Saami clothes?
Jesus was born into humanity as a Jewish child in a Jewish town. But he must also be born into every culture.
The dream becomes reality. The Saami language is beginning to be heard in the churches. And the necessity to open our churches not only for Saami as inhabitants of the country Sweden, but even for Saami as Saami, is being recognised by more and more people. One step forward in the dream coming through is the project "Church in Saami Land" of the Mission Covenant Church.
