Girku sámis - Church in Sámi land
Within the project Church in Sámiland the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden wants to develop a sámi work in the churches. We know it is important that all people can hear the Gospel in their native tongue and to live out their faith through their own culture and language. Therefore we want to develop Sámi church life together with others and give the Sámi culture and language a place in the church. We want to support the Sámi people. Our vision is, Sámi fellowships in several places. We are developing this at the moment especially in the Kiruna area.
The Mission Covenant Church earliest history is intimately connected to Sámi missions. Also today there is a special sámi work, together with other organisations. The first start was in the Storuman and Hemavan-Tärna churches in 1995. We also worked with literature in Sámi. The reactions from the Sámi community were encouraging. 1998 a working group for Sámi work was established. This work is important, since the Sámi are underreprtesented in the area. The Sámi are the indigenous people in this part of the country.
